History

Sudoku puzzles, a grid of spaces where you fill in digits from 1 to 9 so the sub grids contain all nine numbers, and each row and column in the main grid cannot have repeating numbers, relies on the initial setup by the puzzle designer to give you the start of the numerical grid.

The first puzzles appeared in French newspapers around the late 19th century, when puzzle makers started removing digits from a magic square to form the puzzle. The modern form of the puzzle was created in 1895! Nowadays they can be found online, in newspapers and magazines, and books, rivaling crosswords in popularity!

Fun fact: The name Sudoku was created by the Japanese company Nikoli in 1986!
