History
In their current form, the humble crossword puzzle loved by millions came into existence around the 1910s, popularized by New York World. A grid of black and white squares, with the first square of each clue having a number. The number corresponds to the clue, listed alongside of the puzzle grid itself.
Commonly appearing in newspapers, magazines, and books, the crossword puzzle is also a popular online game and has many variants such as cryptic crosswords. Many crossword puzzles have a theme, and most today are created within dedicated software.
Fun fact: A person who makes a crossword puzzle is known as a “Cruciverbalist”!
